Richard W. "Dick" Poppe, Age 76,

Of New Bremen - a beloved teacher, sports enthusiast, and cherished friend, passed away suddenly on September 9, 2025 at his home. He was born on March 3, 1949, in Sidney, Ohio, the son of the late Paul H. Poppe and Doris L. (Coil) Poppe Deam who survives in Sidney. Also surviving are his sister Cheryl (Charles) Christman of Lebanon, TN, a nephew Ryan (Christin) Christman of Lebanon, TN, and niece Angela (Joshua) Funderburk of John's Creek, GA. Also left to cherish his memory are his step-siblings: Jackie Kibler of Urbana, Mark (Joyce) Deam, John Deam, and Marcia (Dan) Schaefer all of Sidney, and his special friends: Rob Koeper and Ross, Ashley, and Jojo Kimble. Along with his own father, Dick was preceded in death by his step-fathers: Jack Swartz and William Deam.

Dick graduated from Anna High School in 1967 before pursuing higher education at Miami University of Ohio, where he earned his bachelors degree in 1972. He later went on to obtain his Master's degree from the University of Dayton. Dick dedicated his life to educating young minds and instilling a love of learning in his students at Hardin-Houston Local Schools, but he was more than just a teacher; he was a mentor, coach, and friend to many. He shared his love for sports by coaching basketball and baseball, inspiring countless student-athletes along the way. His greatest passion, however, remained with Miami University's sports teams. An avid supporter, Dick never missed a game and found joy in sharing his excitement and insights on Miami University's HawkTalk social media, where he garnered a devoted following. He will also be honored and recognized at this weekend's homecoming game as Miami's greatest fan. After retiring, Dick embraced his love for travel, often heading to Las Vegas to play the odds and also enjoyed participating in fantasy leagues. As a sports enthusiast, Dick knew all the players and their stats, and enjoyed the thrill of sports betting. He also traveled far and wide, visiting numerous sports arenas and ballparks, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
