Donald Lee Applegate, age 88,
of Fort Myers, Florida, and formerly of New Bremen, was taken to his heavenly home on Sunday, April 12, 2026. He passed at his home after an illness. Born on May 14, 1937, in Dayton, Ohio, Don was the son of the late Emerson D. and Regina S. (Rismiller) Applegate.
He graduated from Franklin Monroe High School, near Pitsburg, Ohio. In his working years, Don worked at the former Stamco, New Bremen Machine and Tool, and as a very knowledgeable electrician. For numerous years, he also served on the New Bremen City Council. Don was a train enthusiast, enjoyed sports, travel, and his family. His sense of humor brought smiles to many. Church life was important for Don, as he was an active member at Zion Lutheran Church, St. Marys, Ohio and Gateway Trinity Lutheran Church in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Beverly Applegate, and his children, Barbara Brodbeck (Mark), Donna Kuffner (Kris), Al Swartz, son-in-law; the grandchildren, Heather Steinke (Barry), Allison Rose, Joshua Brodbeck (Katya), John Rose; step grandchildren, Ben Swartz, Anna Chambers (Grant); great grandchildren, Matthew Steinke, Emily Steinke and Audrey Steinke. He is also survived by his two sisters, Dorla Chumney and Neva Birt (Terry). In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Swartz.
The family is holding a graveside service on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen, OH. The service will begin at 11:00 am. After the graveside service, family and friends are invited to gather for fellowship and refreshments at the New Bremen Senior Citizens Center, 700 E. Monroe Street. This gathering is from 12 noon to 2:00 pm. The family welcomes you.
A "Celebration of Life" Service is being held in Ft. Myers, Florida, at the Gateway Trinity Lutheran Church, 11381 Gateway Blvd., on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the New Bremen Historic Association or Gateway Trinity Lutheran Church in Ft. Myers, FL, in memory of Don.
